When the FX was first introduced, company officials referred to it as a ‘bionic cheetah’. Since its redesign in 2009, the second-generation model has continued that theme thanks to a 303-hp 3.5-litre V6 or an optional 390-hp 5.0-litre V8. Standard all-wheel drive means the FX handles as well as it looks. The interior offers more luxurious touches than the original, with cross-stitched leather seats and a comprehensive suite of electronics. Fuel economy is horrendous, however.

Pros

Fastest way to the cottage

Cons

Not being able to take the family’s luggage with you
