The new-for-2010 Elantra Touring is essentially a European car tweaked for sale in North America, and it does a great job competing against the class-leading Mazda3. The five-door Hyundai uses the same 140-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder, five-speed manual and four-speed automatic as the sedan, but the package is much sportier and attractive. Interior shares nothing with sedan, but blue gauges can be hard to read in bright sunlight. Cargo area is huge for such a compact vehicle.

Pros

Attractive, sporty

Cons

Could use newer engines, more gears
