Ford’s traditional body-on-frame Explorer will likely be replaced in 2011 with something more car-like. For now, it heads off into the horizon using the same 210-hp 4.0-litre V6 with a five-speed automatic or an optional 292-hp 4.6-litre V8 with a six-speed automatic. All models get either part-time four-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive. The interior has a pleasing design, but the materials are cheap and brittle. Seven seats are optional, but rear row is cramped for adults.

Pros

Go-anywhere SUV

Cons
