The target all others aim for

The BMW M3 has long been the standard-bearer for sports/performance machines, and the current trio of models are the best versions in years. The Coupe cuts weight using things like a carbon-fibre roof, while the Cabriolet’s folding-metal hardtop means the M3 can be used comfortably in winter. The sedan made its reappearance last year, and is the Q-car in the group. All are powered by a 414-hp 4.0-litre V8 with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch automated transmission. Bigger wheels, quad pipes, a big power bulge on the hood and lower suspension help distinguish from lesser models. Inside, special seats and a more aggressive steering wheel are standard too.
