Audi’s biggest problem with the latest-generation A4 came in the engine bay. The revised 210-hp version of its 2.0-litre turbo engine was so good that it made the more expensive, thirstier and only slightly faster V6 version redundant. So for 2010, the V6 is gone for good. What’s left is a combination of either six-speed manual or automatic transmission, with front- or Quattro all-wheel drive. The A4 is one of the best drives in the category, and fuel mileage is excellent as well. Interior still unmatched by BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

Pros

Stylish, roomy and quick

Cons

Needs another engine to bridge big gap to S4
