BMW’s entry-level SUV is starting to get long in the tooth. X3 xDrive28i uses a 215-hp version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder, while the xDrive30i cranks that up to 260 hp. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is aiming at sporty, but just hits rough. Engines need more torque to feel truly powerful. Interior is average for five people, but cargo area is generous. Will be made superfluous when new X1 launches.

Pros

An average attempt at a sporty SUV

Cons

Too expensive, too rough
