While BMW hopes that you’ll think of its seminal 2002 as the inspiration for the 1 Series, in reality, it’s just a case of the correct market conditions. The 3 Series is now the same size as the 5 Series of two decades ago, and so something had to be done to fill the gap. The 1 Series comes in two flavours – 128i with a 230-hp 3.0-litre inline six or the 135i with a twin turbo, 300 hp version of the same engine. While the 128i is quick, the 135i is genuinely fast, putting in performances similar to the previous generation M3. Inside, the cabin is functional, but free of frills. Rear seats are for small children only, though.

Pros

135i a real rocket

Cons

Five-door hatch remains Europe-only.
